How it works
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screen that compares your weight to your height. It is widely used to flag whether you may be under- or over-weight for your height.
BMI does not measure body fat directly and ignores muscle mass, so very muscular people can read as “overweight” while the number is misleading. Treat it as a starting point, not a verdict.
BMI categories
| Underweight | Below 18.5 |
| Normal weight | 18.5 – 24.9 |
| Overweight | 25 – 29.9 |
| Obese | 30 and above |
The formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m is 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.9 — a normal weight.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI? +
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight and 25 or above is overweight.
Is BMI accurate for everyone? +
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes and very muscular people may get a high reading despite low body fat. It is also less reliable for pregnant women, children and the elderly.
How can I change my BMI? +
At a fixed height, BMI moves with your weight. Eating around your daily calorie target and staying active is the steady way to shift it — and logging meals with Nishnush makes those calories easy to see.
